Why a journalist (or ex journalist) should be your media trainer.

Feb 01, 2024

I’m pretty firmly of the view that the best people to conduct media training are journalists who have actually worked in the field that your industry is trying to target.

When it comes to media training, there are many types of trainers to choose from, including public relations professionals, communication consultants, and of course, former journalists like me. While each of these trainers brings unique skills and perspectives to the table, we believe that a journalist is the best type of media trainer.

So why should a journalist, or former journalist be your number one choice as a  media trainer?

  1. Journalists Understand the Media

First and foremost, journalists understand the media. They know how journalists think, what they’re looking for in a story, and how to craft a message that will resonate with the audience. This insider knowledge is invaluable when it comes to media training, as it allows journalists to provide practical, real-world advice that is tailored to each client’s needs.

  1. Journalists are Experienced Communicators

Journalists are also experienced communicators. They have spent years honing their craft, developing the skills and techniques needed to communicate effectively in a variety of situations. This includes everything from conducting interviews and writing stories to appearing on camera and delivering presentations. This experience makes journalists uniquely qualified to teach others how to communicate effectively in a media setting.

  1. Journalists Know How to Tell a Story

At its core, media training is about telling a story. Whether you’re promoting a product, raising awareness for a cause, or responding to a crisis, the goal is always to craft a message that will resonate with your audience. Journalists excel at storytelling, and they can teach others how to do the same. This includes everything from developing a compelling narrative to using vivid imagery and examples to make a message more memorable.

  1. Journalists Can Provide Constructive Feedback

Finally, journalists can provide constructive feedback that is both specific and actionable. Because they are trained to analyze and critique their own work, journalists can provide feedback that is both honest and helpful. They can help clients identify areas where they need to improve and provide practical advice on how to do so. This feedback can be invaluable for anyone looking to improve their media skills.

A journalist is the best type of media trainer because they understand the media, are experienced communicators, know how to tell a story, and can provide constructive feedback. If you’re looking for a media trainer to help you improve your media skills, consider working with a journalist. They bring a unique perspective and skill set that can help you achieve your goals and succeed in today’s fast-paced media landscape.
